Eaton UPS FAQ: Answers I Wish I Had Before I Hooked Up My First Unit

Full disclosure: I'm not an electrical engineer. I'm the facilities guy who orders UPS systems, mounts racks, and maintains the equipment long after the glamour of a new project wears off. I've been handling Eaton UPS orders for eight years. I've personally made (and documented) twelve significant mistakes, totaling roughly $7,500 in wasted budget. Now I maintain our team's 'don't do this' checklist, and this article is the FAQ version of it.

Is an Eaton UPS only for large data centers?

No. I used to think Eaton meant three-phase, forklift delivery, and a maintenance team. Then I looked at the Eaton 5S and 5PX series. Those are normal rack-mount or tower UPS units sized for network closets, small server racks, and even serious home labs.

When I was starting out, the vendors who took my small $300 orders seriously are the same ones I still call for bigger projects. Small doesn't mean unimportant. A single UPS protecting a medical office or a law firm is doing real work. If you're buying one unit, don't let anyone make you feel like you're wasting their time.

That said, this article is mostly about the small single-phase units. The three-phase world is a different animal.

What's the difference between 'Eaton UPS' and 'Eaton Corporation UPS'?

Same product line. Eaton Corporation plc is the parent company. The product's marketing name is Eaton UPS. When you search for 'eaton-ups' or 'eaton corporation ups', you're getting the same product pages, just with different levels of formality.

The model matters more than the name. A 5S is a small single-phase UPS. A 93PM is a modular three-phase system. If a seller tells you their 'Eaton Corporation UPS' is better just because they used the full company name, ignore the label and check the spec sheet.

How do I size an Eaton UPS for a small rack?

Look at watts, not VA. I once ordered a 1500VA unit with a 900W capacity for a rack that measured 1,100W. The UPS complained from the moment I plugged it in. That mistake cost me a restocking fee plus a week of downtime.

Measure the actual load. If you're replacing an existing UPS, use its front panel display. If you're starting from zero, use a clamp meter or add up nameplate ratings. Then add roughly 20% headroom. Eaton lists both VA and watt ratings on each model's spec sheet (eaton.com, accessed January 2025).

At least, that's been my experience with small racks. If you're supporting high-inrush loads like a laser printer or an old hard-drive array, the calculus can be a bit different.

How do I test for power with a multimeter before plugging in a UPS?

Set the multimeter to AC voltage. Put the probes into the outlet: black on neutral, red on hot. For a North American 120V outlet, expect something close to 120V. Then measure hot to ground and neutral to ground. Hot-ground should be near 120V. Neutral-ground should be under a volt or two. If you see unexpected numbers, call an electrician before you connect anything valuable.

I'm not an electrician, so I won't pretend to recite code. I can tell you my procedure: I test every outlet before installing a UPS. In 2021, a miswired outlet showed 123V hot-neutral but 48V neutral-ground. The Eaton UPS caught the input power alarm, but the multimeter caught it first.

If your outlet is 208V or 240V, the expected range will be different. Check the rating on the UPS input nameplate before you plug anything in.

Can I use a lithium ion phosphate battery charger with an Eaton UPS?

Don't. I know 'lithium ion phosphate battery charger' sounds like an upgrade, but a UPS charger is designed for a specific battery chemistry and voltage. If your Eaton UPS was not sold with a lithium option, the internal charger will not manage a lithium battery correctly. A lithium ion phosphate battery charger is a device for charging a bare battery, not for sending power into a UPS that already has its own charger.

In 2018, I tried connecting a LiFePO4 charger to a small UPS battery to condition it. That experiment ended with a swollen battery, a clicking UPS, and a load drop. The UPS was designed for lead-acid, and the charger was pushing voltage numbers for lithium. Lesson learned: stick with the battery type the UPS was designed for.

If you truly want lithium batteries in an Eaton UPS, buy the Eaton lithium battery cabinet listed for your specific model. That's the path that doesn't involve a fire risk.

Can I use a 12v solar battery charger to keep a UPS battery topped up?

I get the logic: you already have a 12v solar battery charger, the UPS battery is 12V, so why not? Because a UPS battery is already connected to a charger. Two chargers on the same battery means a disagreement over target voltage.

In 2022, a customer asked me to add a solar maintainer to a UPS for a security trailer. I advised against it. They did it anyway. Three days later the UPS was in undervoltage alarm and the battery was warm to the touch. The solar charger was holding the voltage around 14.4V, while the UPS charger's float voltage was around 13.6V. The battery never settled at one voltage.

To be fair, there are all-in-one solar inverter/UPS combos that are designed for this. But those are not a standard UPS with an externally attached solar charger.

If you need solar-assisted runtime, buy a UPS with a DC input option or a charger designed to work with UPS architecture. Don't hack a solar maintainer into a sealed battery compartment.

What actually fails before the battery does?

Fans and DC bus capacitors. I know every UPS manual says battery, but checking the battery first can send you down the wrong path. In Q1 2024, one of our Eaton 5PX units started flashing a battery warning. The battery tested fine. The issue was a dust-clogged fan and a bulging capacitor on the DC bus. Replacing the fan and capacitor assembly fixed it and cost less than a new battery pack.

I want to say that 5PX came with a three-year warranty, but don't quote me on that; I might be mixing it up with the 9PX. What I'm sure of is this: if you skip fan checks, the capacitors will eventually take the battery warning from a minor lie to a real failure.

Now every quarterly PM includes a visual capacitor check and a fan feel test. It's not in the official manual, but it's saved us more than once.
